Original and uncut, this OVA special has Naruto and friends on a seemingly harmless escort mission that turns nasty really fast. Playing bodyguard to the cowardly heir of the Village Hidden in the Waterfall, Naruto, Sakura and Sasuke will be glad to unload the sniveling Shibuki. No sooner have they completed their mission when the Hidden Village is attacked by rogue ninjas! They’re after the village’s sacred Hero’s Water that will increase anyone’s chakra more than tenfold. But only Shibuki knows its location. Just what will Naruto and his comrades choose to do? Whatever their choice, you know it will bring lots of action and excitement – believe it!
This special showcases a lot of stellar ninja action, courage and fun. The appearance of the rogue ninjas is both menacing and personally traumatic for Shibuki when he recognizes just who is leading them. They are adults, which gives them a more menacing air than when Naruto goes up against other ninja of the same age. They seem more nefarious. With the villain’s search for the Hero’s Water to increase their strength, Naruto and Shibuki must get their first. It isn’t only a question of making sure the villain Suien doesn’t become more powerful, the water can only be used at a terrible cost. The face-off this leads to for the climatic finale is one filled with courage newly found and redemption for some characters, while some may never rise again. This is the uncut OVA so it has the bloodshed and full violence of the show original and unedited. The animation is on par with the TV series, which has shown above average quality. It has a lot of thrilling moments and the special plays exactly how the title describes it, as if a stand alone mission was lost somewhere in the storytelling only to be found now, shared, and enjoyed. EXTRAS: Bonus features include Shonen Jump manga, magazine and video ads, Naruto video game ad, US credits, and trailers for the upcoming Naruto movie which will see limited theatrical release in the US June 6th only, and in Canada June 23rd only. The movie will be released on DVD early in the fall but you can enjoy the OVA now. IN SUMMARY: Naruto the OVA is a great stand-alone addition to the series. It has lots of ninja fighting action, some drama, and Naruto as always being his same rascal and reckless self.
