The light and lively yaoi love-fest enters in some angst in this latest installment.  Things get Scooby-Doo like when Keita and friends stumble upon an abandoned property on the school grounds, but as each person disappears one after the other into its dark depths, could the place really be haunted? From that little bit of shenanigans, the story enters into some romance and intrigue as Keita and the chairman Kazuki grow closer. This doesn’t go unnoticed by others and soon Keita is thrown into the middle of a power struggle between Keita and the malicious vice-chair Kuganuma. When Keita is pressured to drop out of BL Academy, just what will his answer be?

It is at this point that the anime diverges greatly from the anime by seeming to set-up Keita romantically with Kazuki. In the manga he was instantly in love with “King” Niwa. The anime hasn’t solidified anything yet so it will be interesting to see where the story ultimately goes. The haunted tunnel episode was fun and the later dramatic story arc has some good emotional buildup to it. The anime also gives the surrounding cast of characters moments and their interest in Keita’s future is involving.

The show has a lot of fun teasing the viewer as well. The beginning of each episode has dialogue and impressions that set the imagination ablaze with possibilities, but each time so far, it is a comedic bit of teasing fan service done with a wink and a grin. Also each episode ends with a cute Hamu-Hamu Heaven itty bitty short. These shorts are always quite funny and adorable.

EXTRAS:
Bonus features include the third episode of Hamu-Hamu Heaven which is a comedic little bit of anime omake featuring the boys of Gakuen dressed up as hamsters and ending their sentences with “Hamu” as they have brief comic adventures. They are just too cute. Other extras include trailers of other Media Blasters titles, and clean ending animation.

IN SUMMARY:
The latest volume of this yaoi anime sees some angst enter into Keit’as life as he gets caught in a political power struggle between the man he is drawn to and the villain who would have the fellow deposed. Gakuen Heaven is a charming yaoi anime series rich with laughs, melodrama and romance.
