From the author of Seven comes an all new story of unrequited love and misunderstandings. Paradise on the Hill is a gentle romance filled with timid first love and passionate desire to embrace the object of affection that is loved silently, unknowingly. At an elite school, Kijima is a cool customer who loves his job and has savoir faire and a reserved manner. The new phys ed teacher is his opposite. Ono is energetic with his feelings out in the open and often has the earnestness and vulnerability of someone much younger. His timid yet direct nature charms Kijima and soon the two are caught up in a romance of one-sided love, mistaken beliefs, and misunderstood conversations. Will these two unlikely people be able to finally see what is blooming between them?
This is a charming story. The yaoi isn’t explicit, the romance is heartwarming. The miscommunications that occur are often a combination of frustrating, touching and even gently comedic. It isn’t rife with the melodrama that fills most manga of this genre. Instead, it strives to be a straightforward romantic tale between two young men and the art reflects its honest and gentle nature. The story stretches out through almost the full length of the manga and has an epilogue following the two men after the events of the main story. There is also a bonus story in this manga, “Summer Rain”, that is a bittersweet tale of lost love with a surprising and exceptionally moving turn of events at the end. IN SUMMARY: The Paradise on the Hill is an endearing and straightforward yaoi romance with a gentle nature and tender artwork.
