The ugly secret to Albion’s power has been revealed and the Pope has been abducted by the malcontents. The chaos provides Rosen Kreuz Order the opportunity to attack, hoping to break apart the fragile peace the human Vatican and the Methuselah Empire have been building. From the outbreak of violence, enemies become allies, and Abel’s past is about to explode onto the present for a family reunion that only death can sate. But for the undead, what rest is there for the wicked?

The final volume of this astonishing anime series comes to a shocking conclusion as pasts are revealed, secrets unveiled and the true enemy comes out from the shadows for a direct attack against the Vatican – and Abel Nightroad. The tensions rising politically between the malcontents within the Vatican and the Empire reach incendiary levels as the members of Rosen Kreuz stoke the flames of dissent higher and higher. It was fascinating to watch the Inquisition put aside its differences and work with AX. Then the secret behind Esther’s true identity is revealed. And to crown the glory of this finale, Abel goes up against Cain in a battle of biblical proportions. Abel is forced to actualize his Crusnik abilities to its fullest extent, risking the loss of not only his life, but his soul.

The final battle between Cain and Abel has amazing animation that is beautiful even while watching the deadly scenes. The revelations in these last episodes are well done, with effective impact, and everything builds to an impressive tension-wrought climax. The aftermath is my only criticism. A warning to readers, this next part will have some spoilers, so please be sure to skip it and go down to the extras and summary if you don’t want part of the conclusion spoiled for you. The lack of reconnection, of true resolution, between Esther and Abel will likely leave some viewers dissatisfied. Considering they started this journey together since the beginning of the anime, to fail to give them any kind of true closure at the end may well leave viewers wanting. The majority of the story is wrapped up however, and the show overall has been a tremendous feat of complex story telling and animation full of wicked beauty.
