The second season of Kyo Kara Maoh starts off with a bang with Conrad leading Big Cimaron’s army to capture none other than Yuri! Fighting for their lives against their beloved and once trusted friend, the betrayal takes its toll on Yuri. Friends are deeply concerned but there’s no time for hand holding as the army swoops down on them and soon Yuri and his group are stuck between Conrad and their enemies and the Demon Kingdom’s army on the other. Will Yuri have to battle dear Conrad to save them all? An exciting beginning to the new season, the anime starts off dramatically to become the step for a whole new quest for Yuri and his friends. A new goal, a new journey, in this volume is the foundation for the ongoing sub-plot underlying the episodes to come. There are still the same bouts of zany humor so Kyo Kara Maoh fans don’t worry. There’s even some more cute and funny moments involving favorite couple Yuri and Wolfram. There are also some stand alone episodes such as the one in this volume focusing on the priestess. Most intriguingly, there is an episode revealing parts of Yuri’s childhood. What is so fascinating about this is the cast of new characters it introduces, including Yuri’s older brother. Perhaps I had blinked and missed it but I don’t recall any mention of an older brother in the first season so this must be a surprise the series has thrown at us. It’s an interesting curve ball as we get to meet several new faces. It will be interesting to find out what these new characters will be doing in the episodes to come, as we discover what relevance they will play in the evolving new story arc. There’s been no change with the anime production house so the animation itself is the same energetic and colorful visuals it has been throughout. There is a new ending theme song however. It is lower key than the previous ending song, which makes it the only low key thing about this lively fantasy adventure series. EXTRAS: Bonus features include reverse cover art, Geneon previews of other DVD titles, fan art gallery and clean opening animation. IN SUMMARY: The second season of Kyo Kara Maoh is just as enjoyable as the first part of the series. A new quest is embarked upon and a number of new faces make for a promising start to an exciting story line. |
