The Pro test is coming up. In preparation for it, Hikaru is playing all he can. However, first he faces off against a nasty seeming opponent. Then later, when he gets to the first round of the Pro exam preliminaries, he faces off against a guy who completely intimidates him! Meanwhile Gota, who is becoming increasingly intense lately, challenges Kuwabara for the coveted Hon’inbo Go title.

It’s an interesting round of episodes this time as the unexpected happens – Hikaru begins to come apart. At the first Pro Exam preliminaries, his friends notice his fragility and his weakness: Hikaru has very little tournament experience or experience facing adult and pro opponents. It shakes him up badly. Then later at home, where we get to see his home life at bit more, Hikaru is surprisingly lippy towards his mother. I was surprised that the kind Hikaru suddenly blew up like that at his mother. The stress at the prelims is obviously taking quite the toll. Hopefully it won’t affect his character too badly.  It’s a lesson about the duress of pressure this time in Hikaru no Go. It could be that Hikaru will fail before he even truly beings at the Pro Exam preliminaries.

The latest psychological pressures and emotional toll of the goings on in these episodes create quite a tense and dramatic anime. Considering this is a series about the reflective game of Go, the suspense of the show displays the strong writing as well as the high quality animation.

The Go tutorials are back at the end of each episode and this volume also features a new opening song: “I’ll be the One” that has some pleasing and eye-catching opening animation and there is an enjoyable new ending theme song as well.

EXTRAS:
Bonus features in this volume include previews of other Viz titles, “Know Your Go” glossary, and storyboard and sketches.

IN SUMMARY:
In this latest volume of Hikaru no Go the Pro Exam preliminaries begin, but will Hikaru buckle under the pressure? And just what is Gota-sensei up to?
