This one’s for the super-sleuths – the people who were nosey as children - or still are! Crime and punishment afflict the poor and wealthy alike, and we all have to pay the piper at some point in our lives (and all that dramatic stuff, lol). As the story goes, kid detective Conan Edogawa defies social convention on his quest for the truth, even when it takes him from the grimiest gutters to vast estates where the rich and beautiful mingle with the malicious. From seedy dive bars where rock stars taste the kiss of poison to the halls of academia where vandalism and conspiracy rule the school, not even the people closest to the grade school sleuth are safe from the fickle finger of fate! In this continuing story, old grudges bring new blood. Behind the façade, everyone has a dark side!

Despite that sinister sounding rant, Case Closed is actually fairly funny at times, providing humor as well as a collection of serious crime dramas. The animation style is really different and quirky – it’s very much unlike what most viewers may have seen before because the style is so unique. For anyone who’s seen or is a big fan of the three part OVA series “My Dear Marie,” you’ll recognize the style right away. The characters mostly have elongated faces, large ears, and rounder, more “marble-like” eyes. Expressions are varied and quirky – characters are usually fairly entertaining and distinguishable in both appearances and attitudes/characterization. This anime does show its age slightly, but never in a way has that made it unmemorable or unbelievable. As for story and plot, that’s the best part of Case Closed. The twisted plots and crimes are the root of what makes the show what it is and makes it work. Cased Closed certainly keeps the viewer guessing who is behind whatever conflict has been brought up in the particular episode in question. If that wasn’t enough, the disc holds a more than generous amount of episodes, containing six in total. Six episodes on a single disc is almost unheard of these days, so Case Closed makes a case for giving the viewer a bit of bang for their buck. Volume 3.1 holds episodes 40 to 45: “Billionaire Birthday Blues Part 1,” “Billionaire Birthday Blues Part 2,” “Left in Tatters,” “Karaoke Killing,” “Conan is Kidnapped,” and “Unhappy Birthday” respectively. That’s enough cases to keep anyone busy for a while!

IN SUMMARY:
Case Closed takes crime drama and animates it into an enjoyable show with witty and often complex characters. It avoids being a fluff-filled kid’s show and offers something more intelligent to capture even a more mature audience.
