The battle of Naruto versus Kiba has taken some unexpected turns, but none more so than Naruto’s surprise move! The next battle proves personal, as Hinata must defend herself against her resentful cousin Neji. Hinata, so shy, so timid, her reasons for joining the Chunin Exams are vastly different than her comrades. Can she face up to Neji’s deep grudge in the battle she now faces? The next battle however sees Rock Lee in a showdown with the fighter everyone fears – the enigmatic and dangerous Gaara of the Sand Village!

More exciting ninja battles as the Chunin Exams progress permeate this latest volume. It also shows how far Naruto has come when we see him use his head against his opponent and strategize his attacks. The main fight that takes the majority of the drama has to be Hinata’s.  With both her and Neji coming from the same clan, they have similar jitsu, but Neji is stronger and intent on slamming gentle Hinata with everything he has. The battle is gut wrenching and Hinata proves herself many times over before the final blow. It also leads to more severe consequences and the Chunin Exams take on a more sombre tone.

When Lee goes up against the dreaded Gaara, it is a fight many have been waiting for. There are some stunning battle moves on both sides with shocking surprises for both opponents. This volume ends on the cliffhanger of the revelation of Gaara’s greatest strength and his biggest weakness.

Each intense battle of the Chunin Exams serves as a catalyst for character revelations and confrontations for each of the characters in the anime. It makes for suspenseful bouts and great action loaded with emotional repercussions.
