Paniponi Dash is nuts, plain and simple. A further explanation and reasoning for saying so would take a lot of talent, because putting Pani Poni Dash into words on paper is all but impossible. But if we’re going to make an attempt, the show revolves around an 11 year old girl who becomes a high school teacher and goes through the daily struggles and weirdness that her class of odd balls puts her through (and they also deal with the weirdness that she brings to the situation – and plenty of it we should note). If you’ve seen Azumanga Daioh, or Best Student Council, take those shows, mix them together, and then add in a heaping helping of hallucinogenic chemicals and you’ve got the recipe for some Pani Poni Dash. What could be a normal day in this anime always becomes what is fully “not normal” in ways that will raise eyebrows left and right. And some how they manage to keep this all within a PG rating – applause is warranted. This anime is wildly entertaining for the people out there who are open minded/insane enough to take it all in without having a seizure. Most will think it’s a riot!
Besides the “goings on” in relation to content, the music and visuals are also a whole lot of fun, with unexpected crazy stuff popping out whenever possible. Mumbling salamanders, boring girls hiding out in the rabbit hutch, aliens a plenty, a cast of mostly weirdos and a theme song you feel the need to watch every time. The animation is beautiful, with lots of really great colours. It’s always bursting with colour and details! The show often shows off a really artist edge – very pop art at times. It tries hard, but then doesn’t – but the attitude it gives off is just so damn cool. Opening themes especially – you have to see them to understand. The Roulette Roulette opening is the best – wicked catchy song. Oh yeah, forgot to explain – this anime has multiple opening themes to give more variety. Just another piece of the puzzle that makes the whole package burst with entertainment value. As if the story makes sense, but lets go through a breakdown of volume three. When the girls discover that No. 6 seems to have a secret crush, they’ll stop at nothing to discover who he (or she!) is. But how will they find her crush’s identity? Coerce their 11-year-old teacher Becky into discovering the truth for them of course! But that’s nothing in comparison to the strange red bull monster in lust with another one of the girls - or a giant evil robot attacking their school! Other than that – all the inbetween stuff is for the viewer to decide on. Everyone is going to see this one differently because there’s so much to see. Just give it a try – it’s a very strange, if not also totally enjoyable experience! EXTRAS: AD Vid-Notes, “In Class with the Cast”, Pani Poni X, Reversible Cover, a new Special Opening: Roulette Roulette (basically a whole new opening theme song and animation – very cool!) and a clean closing animation. IN SUMMARY: Paniponi Dash is Azumanga Daioh on crack. It takes the school social situation we know and love and makes it more insane than most of us could fathom. Bring your sedatives.
