Two characters touched upon in the first novel now get a chance for their own story in this second yaoi novel. Kaitani doesn’t seem to have what it takes to really make his mark in the world of cosmetics. He’s a little lazy and a bit self-centered. When he falls for his boss, the meticulous and controlled Fujiwara, a war of words and business ensues as he tries to find a way to win the Section Chief’s heart. As Kaitani pushes himself, his product and Fujiwara, will he be able to gain his heart’s desire? Or will he see all his dreams go up in smoke? Set against the backdrop of a highly competitive cosmetics business, it makes for a dynamic and energetic setting for this romantic war. The forbidden love between a subordinate and his boss is done with a flair one would expect from this genre. Add in the appealing illustrations by the artist and it is a story that on many levels succeeds. However, it also bears some flaws that make it difficult to wholeheartedly commit to the main character. Kaitani starts off as a love sick puppy and it is easy to empathize with him until about the third act in the book. He is faced with certain obstacles and rather than meeting them with sensitivity or maturity he resorts to quite despicable behavior such as further blackmail (first seen in the first novel), and some other rather dastardly behavior. It hurts the budding romantic atmosphere of the story overall and the reader’s sympathy for his character. A second problem is a technical one. There is unfortunately a great deal of typos in this book. Although the translation itself seems sound, there are a number of mistyped words, homonyms, typos and even repeated words that can throw a reader off. However, if you don’t mind a more aggressive main character that will stop short of nothing to get his guy, then you’ll enjoy this novel which is at times quite explicit. IN SUMMARY: The second novel of the Don’t Worry Mama series – The Man Who Doesn’t Take Off His Clothes 2, is an uneven yaoi novel that vacillates between a Harlequin style romance and the more sordid behavior of the main character.
