In a broken city, a broken man named Roy lives out his days in apathy as a bounty hunter. That is until the day a peculiar Resemble named Solty falls into his life. Now Roy has far more on his hands with her and the trouble they get into then he knows what to do with. Under it all though, is his constant search for the daughter he hopes is still alive, the striving for survival in this harsh city, and the mystery surrounding Solty.

This diverse and engaging sci-fi starts this volume on a comedic note with Rose the thief smooching off of Roy and living with him and Solty. She is getting on Roy’s last nerve and he is beside himself on how to get rid of her. The regular methods are not working. Just when they think they have Rose figured out, Roy, Solty and the rest of their friends are astonished when a chance sighting of a man on the street sends Rose into a frightful state – and a path of murderous revenge.

Later, we are given some more comedy as we get to see most of the female cast of Solty the anime on their day off. It is a day filled with laughs, some insights into the various young women in this series, and a handsome young RUC agent who has his eyes fixed on Rose. The final episode on this volume finds Rose and Solty trapped underneath the rubble within one of the buried cities beneath the streets. As their friends fight to get them out, a few clues about Solty’s unusual capabilities surface.

This volume offers a lot of character development on Rose which reveals why she has such a strong conviction about helping her fellow non-registered citizens. Her story helps deepen the viewers understanding of the class disparity between the registered and un-registered citizens within the world of Solty Rei. This anime shows an incredible diversity in the range of moods within its stories. Exciting to the nth degree, you never quite know what the story will throw at you next. And yet no matter what is thrown at the audience, the episodes, no matter how different, all fit seemingly effortlessly into the grander scheme of the plot. In that respect and in light of its Jazz score, it has some similarities to Cowboy Bebop which also had varied moods and tones with its episodes. In these four episodes we are given comedy, tense drama, thick suspense, action, murder, and naughty females scheming, tender bittersweet moments between unlikely connections, and a science fiction mystery.

Fantastic animation and the cityscapes when shown continue to be breathtaking. The jazz score throughout the series is a toe-tapping experience that really catches the ear and adds to the engaging energy of the anime. The voice cast is phenomenal, with the English female voice cast standing out as their abilities are quite striking. This particular volume has a super-deformed omake at the end of a short with Rose and Solty explaining Resemble technology.

IN SUMMARY:
Solty Rei is a diverse ride of excitement, surprises and an incredibly intriguing cast of characters.
