Although merman Kaioh and his shy and submissive human lover Kanan are still swimming around, the unexpected sequel focuses more on bratty Haru and the Prince of the seas the Lord Amur.

Haru is still in a huff over losing to Kaioh. He’s chatting up his only buddy the giant clam. The clam is sweeter than any clam you could meet. The clam wishes with all its heart that it could have hands to comfort the sobbing Haru and poof! Meet Pito, a human young man that cannot speak. Haru is a bit harsh but soon accepts the adoration of wee Pito.  He confesses to the clam turned boy that if only Haru had the legendary aquamarine, he would be happy. Intent on helping him, Pito searches far and wide to find one. Up to no good, Lord Amur shows up in front of Pito and offers him an aquamarine if Pito will come home and to bed with him. Pito refuses so Amur tosses the stone down a deep ravine! Pito swims to find it and ends up bullied and beaten by sharks. By the time he is returned to Haru he’s all bruised up. Haru at last understands the meaning of what true happiness is when he has Pito in his arms.

The story is followed up by Amur behaving badly. He wants his servant Meiki who keeps refusing him. Amur gives up most of his vices (too bad he can’t do anything about that personality!) and still Meiki refuses. Finally the king goes to extreme, really outrageous lengths, even dismissing his harem in order to get Meiki.  The final offer will either see him ruined or at last find a smidgeon of true happiness in Amur’s own twisted away.

Kanan and Kaioh do get some play time in this sequel. They go to say farewell to Haru and Pito and Amur (still up to no good) whisks them away from Pito and puts them in the middle of the desert! There is no worse place he could have stranded the mermen. Now timid Kanan has to find an oasis in time to save the mermen before it’s too late!  After all that, Amur is still being nasty and buries Pito under rubble for Haru to beg in order to save him. Kaioh has another idea and its time for brawn and straightforward actions to put Amur in his place. If they dare.

There are two bonus stories. The first tells of Izumi who is a mermaid hiding his true identity from his lover Sota. But the chef has some ideas about his boyfriend and goes to risky lengths in order to make Izumi fess up.

The final story features Kaioh and Kanan. The human is distressed when he can’t find the aquamarine Kaioh gave him. Silly Kanan, he just can’t get how Kaioh thinks.

The sequel has plenty of fantasy fodder. My sole issue is how young the artist makes the submissive characters look. It twigged me. Other than that, the stories were imaginative and a lot of fun.
