Last time Zatch made a new friend with cutey little Shion and her cat mamodo. They each had a piece of a mirror and he agreed to help her bring it back to the guy who promised she would never have to fight and could be with her best friend mamodo cat forever if she gave it up. Somehow, they never saw the evil comin’. Zatch, Kiyo, Shion and her cat mamodo meet up with professor Hakase and his mamodo Grisor. Of course they’re evil, of course they have no intention of keeping any promises to Shion, and of course they lied to her. And of course when they get the pieces together, Grisor is turned into a monstrous mamodo that Zatch and the gang have to beat. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a show geared more towards younger audiences so I don’t mind some of the plot being predictable. In fact, despite that, the show caught me off guard. The harsh scene with Shion’s loss got to me. It got me choked up, I swear to ya. I couldn’t believe it but I had tears in my eyes. Either I’ve gone soft or this volume has some hard hitting moments emotionally. Poor little Shion and her cat mamodo! Kiyo and Zatch are unforgiving at this dastardly deed and their about to go for a little payback and righteous justice. But big mamodo dude’s got the mirror power and now the island is on fire! Kiyo and Zatch may be cool, but things might have gotten too hot to handle - even for them! This is a cool anime show. It’s got heart. The whole lesson about what inner strength is moved me and would be stellar for the kids. The friendship between Shion and Zatch was moving stuff. It was pretty tense this volume but the last episode on the disc was back to the zany fun when Zatch finally gets the guts to confront the terrible toothsome terror, his bully Naomi. He just had the bad timing of doing it when a fierce lion got loose from the zoo. How does the rampaging lion and Zatch fighting his bully tie in? You’ll have to watch this volume to find out! EXTRAS: Extras include previews of other Viz titles, Zatch video games, card games and manga. IN SUMMARY: A whack of drama in for zany Zatch and his buddies this round, but Zatch Bell has a big heart that you’ll feel. It’s a cool anime for kids and us young at heart types.
