After Naraku had opened up the gate to the netherworld to gain the last shard of the Sacred Jewel, Inuyasha, Kagome and their friends were in hot pursuit. They crossed the River of Blood and now find themselves at Inuyasha’s father’s burial site. There, the last shard rests, but it is guarded by a demon made of a substance that can cut through anything, and nothing can cut through it. Trying to get the shard before the evil Naraku does, Inuyasha and Kagome unknowingly fall in the maniacal Naraku’s Machiavellian plot. The shard turns black and soon the shard is the least of the heroes problems as they now must fight for their lives to make sure they are not left trapped in the netherworld for all eternity!

This fairy tale takes a tense turn into fast paced action and incredible danger in these latest episodes. Trapped in the underworld, the group now fights a Naraku who has grown immensely in power. When all odds turned against them, the unlikeliest person turns up – Sesshomaru! But is he there to help Inuyasha or bury him?

As this story is gearing up towards its final episodes, the action and suspense are built up supremely well for a thrilling fantasy adventure with the heroes battling and everything is on the line. All of Inuyasha’s attacks are proving useless against the stronger Naraku so he must find a way to make him and his enchanted sword stronger. With the appearance of Sesshomaru, viewers are treated to a great battle as Inuyasha and friends fight for their lives, Naraku fights to destroy everyone and Sesshomaru is there to duel with all who insult his sense of propriety by intruding on his father’s grave. Kagome has an intriguing moment when she is pushed to use the last arrow which was given to her by Kikyo. Just what are Kikyo’s true intentions in all of this? And if they band together, can Inuyasha, the human girl Kagome, and Sesshomaru defeat Naraku once and for all? The intrigue runs high, the action picks you up and carries you along for the exciting ride, and the mysteries aren’t all answered yet.

One of the most impressive things about this fantasy series is its constant ability to keep the interest keen and the story invigorating. As the anime series has developed, it became a much more layered series than simply a girl and half-demon thrown together by a rift in time to gather a sacred jewel and keep it from evil. It is not a simple revenge story against the evil Naraku and all the terrible things he has done to the group of heroic travelers. For them, the choices are hard. One of the most prevalent examples of this is Sango. She must avenge her clan by killing Naraku and stopping his horrific rampage, but if she does, she will also be destroying her revived brother whose life essence is tied with Naraku’s. Therefore for her, killing Naraku will mean she has, in a way, killed her own brother. It is a terrible choice to have to face. For Inuyasha and Kagome, although they seem to have no doubt about what the right and good thing to do is, if they gather all the shards and defeat Naraku once and for all, it will mean their inevitable and eternal separation. It makes for a fantastically gripping story and visually the animation keeps up with its vital characters.

Volume 52 contains episodes 155 to 157.
