The penultimate volume of Saiyuki takes advantage of the new player in Sanzo’s midst to create tension and danger for Sanzo and the balance of peace between demons and humans. Sanzo now travels alone after having ostracized his demon companions. He’s not as alone as he’d like to be, as Hazel and his revived living dead servant Gato are always dogging his steps. Things get lethal when an old enemy, the demon who controls illusions, Zakuro, confronts Sanzo and traps him. It isn’t just the demon Sanzo faces however. Hazel recruited the evil illusionist to force Sanzo into a choice, join Hazel on his quest to annihilate all demons on the face of the Earth or die! Although Gato’s background was interesting, the real meat comes in the final two episodes on this disc when Zakuro appears, Sanzo gets trapped, and Hazel’s true goal for following Sanzo is revealed. It is a curious battle as it is both a physical one and a spiritual/mental one as Hazel appeals to Sanzo based on their similar pasts. Hazel does have some logic, misplaced those his aims may be. Sanzo’s reactions to Hazel’s attempts are an intriguing character study of the main hero of the series. The big surprise is when it is unveiled that there is someone pulling the strings behind Hazel and his powers, someone Sanzo knows. Even though this doesn’t have as much of the fun and comedy that is usually paired with the kick butt action, there is still some side comedy with glimpses into what Goku, Hakkai and Gojyo are doing while separated from Sanzo. It’s not surprising that these most recent episodes move the story to a more tense and dramatic plateau since the show is building up to its climatic finale in the next and final volume. The division between Sanzo and his group and the danger they all are in, topped with the big reveal of who is maneuvering things (and it’s not Hazel) has really brought this anime series back on track with the enjoyable and exciting fantasy adventure Saiyuki is known for. EXTRAS: Bonus features on this disc include Geneon previews, music clip “in the world” featuring Gojyo and sung by Nobuko Kotani, and a second music video featuring Kougaiji and his group called “spirit”, sung by Takeshi Kusao. IN SUMMARY: The danger Hazel becomes to Sanzo and the world returns Saiyuki to a more strongly compelling story and more Saiyuki action.
