Always up for a great laugh and tremendous fun, Moeyo Ken is anime that is a sheer pleasure to watch. Its comedy runs high and it never stops with the crazy antics of the Mobile Shinsengumi and their bumbling efforts to make any supernatural matter worse! This round, the girls will stop at nothing to ensure their meal ticket, the clueless nice guy Ryuunosuke, stays in Kyoto and doesn’t leave Japan. They’ll even go so far as to try to get him to marry one of them! Kondou takes matters further by summoning a goddess to make a love match for Ryuunosuke, only for it to end up in a one on two goddess match over Kyoto. All that excitement doesn’t even include the appearance of a fox demon bent on retrieving a magical item in Okita’s care, the reveals of both Okita’s and later Kondou’s secret heritages, cursed candy, and Ryuunosuke being turned into a girl! It’s all a day in the life of Moeyo Ken! The comedy runs just as high this volume, but does take the time to focus a bit more on the backgrounds and interpersonal relationships of the gals of the Mobile Shinsengumi. It does a solid job of establishing Okita’s love interest in Ryuunosuke and since he and Sayoko remain clueless as to any possible attraction between them, just maybe the somewhat ditzy Okita has a shot. The show only brings in the slightest touch of angst and extra mild horror in the last episode that shows the somewhat sad childhood of Kondou while the gang is trying to stop a demon that eats children’s souls. It doesn’t take long to find the fun in any situation though, and the bath house episode just before hand involving Ryuunosuke’s “Ranma moment” of transforming into a girl leads to a lot of comedy. EXTRAS: Bonus features on this volume include clean opening and ending animation, ADV previews, the music video of the full length version of the ending theme song “Hajimuro no Kazeyo Fuke” sung by Misato Fujiya who is featured in the music video, interviews with the Japanese crew including the Game Director, Anime Director, and Creator and Story Editor, and there’s more entertaining commentary, this time on episode 8, by the English ADR Director Charlie Campbell and voice talent Laurie Gallardo (voice of Hijikata). Definitely check out the commentary for both of their hilarious impersonations of Nekomaru. IN SUMMARY: Moeyo Ken is pure entertainment. It’s a colorful anime always throwing something new and hilarious to get the laughs. It’s a fun fantasy comedy series.
