GAOGAIGAR has a lot going for it – it’s a quick moving, action packed giant robot anime that has the potential to appeal to audiences both young and old. One of the most quickly noticeable positive traits that it has is that the mecha in this anime have numerous similarities to our old favorites, the Transformers. Watching this show you could almost think you were watching an updated, better animated spin-off of the old original Transformers TV series – and there’s nothing wrong with that! But this isn’t just a Transformer’s “wannabe” – it’s got buckets of it’s own originality and fierce action. The transformation scenes are crazy – crazy because they actually seem to make physical sense. Here’s a transforming giant robot series that actually takes the design concepts seriously enough that you will come to think they must have spent some real time trying to figure out how to make it look believable. It looks like this thing could actually come together and be a workable giant robot in real life. It has joints and connectors and gadgets and cogs and the whole bit – no kidding! Some of the better Gundam series are king when it comes to realistic mecha design and functionality, but when it comes to possibly realistic transformation, GAOGAIGAR is it. Besides that, everything is high tension and high drama from the opening sequence to the ending credits. Orders are shouted, giant robots clash, and sometimes our heroes even have to figure out how to escape simulated black holes right here on earth. It’s a good thing they have a boundless supply of new gadgets and robot buddies to get them out of some tight spots!

In this fourth installment of the series, the menace that looms over our heroes is quickly spreading. The Four Machine Kings do their best to bring about chaos, backing the GGG into a corner. Gai’s ultimate attack, Hell and Heaven, is tearing GAOGAIGAR apart inside and out. Each time he uses it, he fears it could be his very last. Our worst fears are answered when a gigantic Zonder metal plant appears in the city, forcing Gai to use the attack once more. Gai doesn’t hesitate to use his forbidden attack and sacrifices himself for everyone else. But to his friends, the fight isn’t over yet! Young Mamoru makes quick moves to save his friend, and goes into battle himself. With Volfogg at his side, he attacks the Machine Kings head on in a desperate last ditch effort to purify the Zondar plant. Despite his bravery, the enemy cannot be driven back unless GGG fields its most unstable, untested superweapon: The Goldion Hammer! Suffice to say: It’s hammer time! (woot)

All in all, GAOGAIGAR has a lot of the old goodness that makes a giant robot show what it is, but has no lack of its own new additions to make it stand out from the crowd. It’s an interesting mix that relies more heavily on straight up action without complex character backgrounds and such. It’s worth a look, especially for a younger crowd looking to get into a more interesting anime than what you’ve been watching on TV. It’s a good “starter” giant robot series – it would have any kid’s eyes glued to the screen for hours.

EXTRAS:
The disc extras include an image gallery.

IN SUMMARY:
GAOGAIGAR is fast moving, entertaining, and thankfully stays away from being laughable or too campy. It is a good giant robot show with a lot going on visually and action wise and it is geared toward younger audience of children and early teens.
