Things seemed to be settling down for Wataru and Yuichi. Entrance exams are coming up for Wataru and Yuichi has promised they will get a place of their own once he graduates. But alas, all good things must come to an end. Between two jealous brothers, a rival for his affections and a mystery girl with a claim on Yuichi’s past, Wataru is about to be thrown into the maelstrom in the penultimate volume of Only the Ring Finger Knows.

What a tumultuous volume of the novel series this fourth one has turned out to be. Time apart due to the demands of Wataru’s exams and Yuichi catching a cold do not help settle Wataru’s frayed nerves. When Shohei returns to meddle in their affairs, Wataru is at a loss on how to deal with Yuichi’s conniving older brother. At first it is a simple plea to help Shohei with his sweet daughter Tokako who has fallen into a depression after her dog took ill. But with Shohei there is always a hidden agenda. With Asaka still a part of Wataru’s life, Shohei sees the opening he needs to drive a wedge between Yuichi and Wataru. First is with Masa’aki, Masanobu’s brother, who is fit to be tied that Masanobu has fallen for Wataru. Things only get worse when Wataru discovers a Christmas card to Yuichi and learns that it is from Yuichi’s first love, a girl who has taken ill and has Yuichi flying all the way to New York to be with her!

To his credit, Wataru tries to be strong. He attempts to be the supportive boyfriend suddenly thrown into a long distance relationship while Yuichi takes care of the girl he once loved. Does he still? The fear nags at Wataru’s frantic heart. Asaka is right there waiting it out, supportive yet also hopeful that this might be his opportunity to win Wataru over. At every turn there is Shohei prodding here, laying down just the right word there in order to stir things up. He has Masa’aki confronting Wataru for all sorts of things regarding Asaka. It is not an easy time for Wataru at all. With his entrance exams coming up, how can he hope to pass them, avoid Shohei’s traps, and keep his head clear and his relationship going all at the same time?

With all that going on, something has to break and it does. The penultimate volume of the novel series stirs things up like never before and leaves readers on a stormy and heartbreaking note.
