Distraught over the destruction he caused and the loss of his friend Anzu, Atsuma retreats from all others, closing himself off emotionally. An unexpected person reaches out to him, Sumire. And even more surprising, she reaches him, bringing him back from the brink of despair. Their mutual loneliness proves a bonding point and a bridge of understanding brings them together. Shui joins them and together, each for their own personal reasons, confront Shiki to learn the ugly truth NOA is willing to kill to hide.

This is the most intense volume yet of the dark sci-fi manga series. We learn a great deal about the pasts of not only Atsuma, but of Sumire, Shui, Aika and Shiki. Their personal desires are bared to us in these exhilarating chapters. Finally, the man behind Shiki, the one the conniving Yanagi truly works for, is unveiled. Utsuho is a man of power and he reveals the true goal of NOA, the reason for their existence, and the terrible aims he will make of them all. Okikurumi is found, but could it be too late as Atsuma faces off with the man who betrayed him?

This volume is an overwhelming avalanche of revelations and superb story telling. The way each of the characters’ deeper motives are shown makes for entrancing character development. The big confrontations and awful truths learned in these chapters are thrilling as well as disturbing. Utsuho seems an invincible antagonist. A big battle with extraordinary powers ensues but with terrible, and some fatal, results for more than one main character. There are huge, irrevocable developments in this volume for the characters and the direction of the series. There are numerous moments that evoke utter shock and awe. I’ve never before witnessed so many monumental revelations in only one volume. The story is stunning, the artwork striking and the series is incredibly suspenseful.

Extras in the manga include a full color cover page, terminology notes, translation notes, character notes, and an English translated preview of the next volume.

IN SUMMARY:
Kamui is a dark and exhilarating ride. It is a manga X fans must read. This volume has main character secrets revealed, identities uncovered, and the fate of more than one character coming to a terrible end.
