The enemy from Seimei’s past, the evil Chishiki no Guuji, plans to break the seal to the underworld, unleashing demons to create a hell on earth and he plans on using Guren to do it! Desperate to break the Soul Binding Spell that holds Guren under Guuji’s sway, Masahiro goes to the God of Takaokami at Kifune for help. But the goddess gives him a shocking offer and an ominous answer. In order to stop Guuji, he will have to stop Guren. But is there no other way to stop Guren except by killing him? Gifted with the power to slay a god, Masahiro must choose between his friendship and saving the world in the final climatic volume of Shonen Onmyouji!

The journey is a painful one to the place of the final confrontation. The romantic yet tragic arc between shikigami Kurogou and the misguided Kazane comes to a heartrending end. The first seal has already been broken leaving only one left and Guren (also called Touda) is about to break it. Seimei faces his ancient enemy Guuji, prepared to give his life in order to stop fifty years of animosity and malevolence.

The altercations are met with tears and loss. A special pact was made by Masahiro in order to save his dearest friend, one that will be a heavy burden for the young man. While the battles between Guren and the shikigami are splendid animation action to watch in this fantasy series, it is the final confrontation between Masahiro and Guren/Touda that touches the heart with its emotional core. Sacrifices are made, but none as terrible as Masahiro’s. The fate of the world and the life of his friend are in his hands and the young aspiring Onmyouji priest must make a fateful decision if he wishes to save all.

It has been a well done, if at times slowly paced, fantasy series. Everything comes full circle for an emotional conclusion. Viewers will want to make sure they watch until the very end of the credits on the last episode to catch the very end of the story and see a beautiful idyllic scene as well.
