The latest volume of this fantasy adventure really mixes up the tones to give the viewer a bit of everything: comedy, action, and drama. First, it starts of with a rousing comedy when a female fiancée is chosen to meet with Yuri while Wolfram is gone. But when Wolfram shows up, incensed over a girl going after his Yuri, we find out that the girl is Wolfram’s fiancée! Soon Yuri is in way over his head in this crazy romantic triangle and finds himself in a duel with the woman for Wolfram’s hand in marriage! From there the show goes next to a bit of mystery and some fantasy styled action as Yuri follows up a lead on one of the magic boxes. Soon he and his men find themselves dealing with a forest priestess and the infiltrating soldiers of Big Cimaron who may already have their hands on the box! Afterwards, we are given a very different beat as the next episode deals with Gwendal’s past, revealing his childhood and a pivotal moment that has defined him as the stoic and honorable man he has become as an adult. A new story arc begins afterwards when Big Cimarron launches its latest scheme to throw over the Demon Kingdom. They’ve managed to take the children of surrounding nations’ hostage and now Yuri has to figure out how to save them and himself from their evil clutches. He gains unexpected help from Adalbert. But as they go on the run trying to evade the army, Adalbert has some hard questions about Julia’s soul residing within Yuri… This set of episodes ranges from some hilarious off-quilter comedy with Wolfram’s fiancée, to some action of the fantasy genre, then to a bittersweet background story, and finally to action and danger for Yuri that also leads to some angst as Adalbert confides in Yuri about his relationship with Julia which raises a certain amount of intrigue with just who Conrad was to Julia. As the second season progresses, more and more Big Cimaron is taking center stage as the main antagonist of the series for Yuri. In this season, Yuri is becoming increasingly comfortable in his role as Demon King it seems. He’s more comfortable giving commands and asserting himself as a ruler. It hasn’t lessened his ability to get into trouble one little bit, keeping the show engaging and exciting. EXTRAS: Bonus features include reverse cover art, Geneon previews of other DVD titles, and clean ending animation. IN SUMMARY: The latest volume has a great range of episodes. There’s something for everyone ranging from comedy, to drama, to some exciting fantasy sword and sorcery action for Yuri and his allies. |
