Here’s something you don’t see every day! One half of the Golden pair of Seishun Academy, Eiji Kikumaru, is playing singles. Why? His doubles partner is out of commission at the moment. He is up against one of the best singles players from Higa Junior High, Yujiro Kai. Eiji has his work cut out for him, but he uses a technique that no one suspects even exists, let alone works! Kai, however, also has unique strategies on how to win! He does something that Ryoma has done in the past, which was starting the game using his weaker hand and a regular grip. His real grip is revealed only when he sees that he’s losing. Now, one of the matches you’ve all been waiting for: the battle of the Captains! The captains of both the Higa and Seishun teams are now in a singles game. The Higa captain, Eishiro Kite, is described as ruthless and deadly accurate in his game, so the Seishun captain, Kunimitu Tezuka, has to be at the top of his game. It ends up that Tezuka uses a technique he hadn’t used in a few years because of health reasons. But now he’s well enough to try it again. Will he win or be defeated painfully? In a surprise turn of events, Seishun is in the final eight! Now the competition really starts to heat up with only the strongest teams in play! The art, as usual, is extremely expressive, showing the action and sometimes the aggressiveness of the jumps and footwork of the players. For instance, the height from which Eiji returned some of his opponent’s serves and some other shots was perfectly drawn. The story is getting really quite exciting with the Nationals now truly underway!
