A soundtrack with music as darkly compelling as the anime it comes from, Ergo Proxy Opus 01 has a mix of the dramatic themes from throughout the Neo-gothic sci-fi series. Some are the tensely driven drums and score such as track 5 “Prayer” and the suspenseful track 11 “Wasteland Nostalgia”. Although some of the tracks do tend to sound a bit too similar at times, overall the soundtrack boasts some engrossing dramatic scores that range from heavy synthesizer themes to more orchestral sounding ones. There is even one that that sounds like monks chanting during a darker themed techno score within track 3 “New Pulse”. The one vocal track the CD contains is the enthralling full length version of the anime series’ opening theme “kiri” by Monoral. They’re a Japanese band that sounds very much like an Eastern version of Radiohead. The song is sung in English and has a sound that seems to come straight from the soul. With such aching lyrics as “You complete my fate, The world unwinds inside of me” you’ll find yourself entering the soul of the anime itself with it’s yearning for belonging and search for inner truth in a shadowy world. The CD packaging has a full color insert with the English lyrics of the Monoral song, a profile of Monoral, and an interview and profile of Yoshihiro Ike (Composer, Arranger, Bassist). The composer has worked on such notable and also darkly suspenseful anime series as Blood and Karas. IN SUMMARY: This is a soundtrack that provokes a thoughtful mood and touches on deeper emotional depths. It’s music straight from the Neo-Goth anime right onto the CD and with the alluring full length version of the Monoral song, it is a must have for fans not only of Ergo Proxy but also of suspenseful and subtly darker themed music.
