2006 Japanese manga market drops below 500 billion yen due to the movement away from the printed-book culture, and the decline of young adults and teens population
According to a report summary filed by The Research Institute for Publications, the 2006 domestic manga sales in Japan has declined 4.2% from 2005, with a total sale of 481 billion yen, and sales has been gradually decreasing for the last 10 years. Part of the reason of the weakening sales is the decline in the population of young adults and teens, and the movement away from the printed-book culture as it indicates a change in social trend where the younger generation's time is occupied by their cell phones.
