SYNOPSIS:
The criminal mind is a twisted one and Jimmy Kudo knows the shady corridors of humanity like no other detective in the business.  He’s put more scum behind bars than just about anyone on the beat and his skills have earned him plenty of enemies, and he pays the price one dark night… Being poisoned and left for dead.

But rather than meeting his end in a shallow grave, Jimmy gets a new beginning.  Awakening to find himself transformed, the evil elixir of his faceless foes has changed him into a small boy – a perfect cover!  Utilizing his unlikely new persona and cutting edge technology, Jimmy is hot on the trail of his assailants as Conan Edogawa.

The path to justice will be littered with cruelty and madness, the worst of man on display as this sleuth cuts through the underworld in search of answers, solving one sick crime at a time.  Truth is not open to interpretation. There’s no room for error when life and limb are on the line.  A detective like no other. Conan is on the case!

REVIEW:
Jimmy is a high school student who is extremely good at solving crimes, anything from murder to kidnapping!  When he is poisoned and his body is shrunk to the size of a child, he decides to go under cover as a friend of Professor Agasa, and ends up living with a close friend of his, Rachel Moore, and her detective father, Richard Moore.

With the help of a voice-changing device that looks like a bowtie, he can imitate any voice, man or woman.  He also has a watch that shoots tranquilizer darts, which he uses to knock out Richard when Conan needs the authorities and suspects to listen to him.  Adults, even teenagers sometimes ignore what a child has to say.  Conan also has shoes that, when a dial is turned, can strengthen his kick considerably.  This does help in some cases where he has to help someone out of a jam. The detective series is fun with a touch of suspense and with all the gadgets has similarities to Get Smart.

The audio is quite good and the music on the English soundtrack is the same as the Japanese soundtrack.  The names of the characters and locations are Americanized in the English version, while the Japanese names and locations stayed true to the Japanese version.  The English version was Americanized because it was aired on YTV in Canada and the Cartoon Network in the United States.  The voice actors were well chosen for the characters.

The anime style is simple, yet it works in this context.  The manga it’s based on, by Gosho Aoyama, is drawn in the same style that the anime imitates.  The characters have great expression, and the murder victims are not gory at all!  The animators make sure to keep the gory parts in shadow which is also true to the style of the manga.

Each episode is unedited, uncut and a stand-alone mystery except for a few 2-parters. This is similar to the still ongoing manga series, one of the longest running in Japan’s network history. It’s a great anime that can be watched out of order and nothing is missed!

EXTRAS:
The box set features episodes 53-79 (27 episodes in total), and the extras are a character spotlight on Richard Moore, a description of one of Conan’s gadgets, the wristwatch stun gun and trailers of other Funamation releases.  The soft box has Conan, Amy and Detective Maguire along with Gin and Vodka, the two men in black that shrunk Conan on the front and the back has a villain known as the Night Baron.  The first disc cover has a group shot of the Junior Detective League, Rachel, Richard, Professor Agasa and Conan, and the inside has Conan and Rachel sitting at a table having tea on a patio.  The second disc cover has Rachel and Conan and the inside has Rachel with Jimmy running off.

There is nothing small about the mystery and adventures in the third season of Case Closed!
