From the creator of Punch! and Happy Hustle High comes a stand alone supernatural romance that is filled with fun, cuteness and entertainment when a demon falls in love with a mortal who is anything but mere! “Gaba Kawa” is a term that means ‘cute stubbornness’. When the mortal high school student Retsu calls demon girl Rara that, she ends up in a lot of hot water with her people down below as she falls in love of the first time. Rara is a demon who has entered the human world for two reasons. The first is to steal mortal souls, what every ‘good’ demon is supposed to do. The main reason however is to win over the affection of the demon Aku. But a name mix up and one misunderstanding after another makes her think the boy Retsu is him. After all, Retsu is so handsome it is sinful. He’s mysterious, and he seems to have the uncanny ability to sense her presence when she’s invisible. By the tiem she’s learned the error of her mistaken identity, it’s too late. She’s smitten by the mortal and is now in a heap of trouble and like an avalanche, it’s only getting worse! She has to contend with a rival demon girl named Bibi, and a lowly lost soul who wants to possess Retsu in order to be one with Rara and become a demon himself! FI all that weren’t bad enough, the more time she spends with Retsu means the more time he has to put the pieces together. The worst happens when eh demon higher ups give the fallen Rara an ultimatum: she msut kill Retsu by the tiem the moon hits its zenith or she will fade forever! Love sometimes means tough choices, but this is out of this world! Gaba Kawa is a highly entertaining romantic romp. It goes for laughs and cuteness more than angst (the climatic end aside). The supernatural twists give it creative spice and interesting turns for the story. The art style is quite similar to the story telling. Aside form the handsome Retsu, Rara is cute and often laughable in her many outrageous expressions and circumstances given imagery throughout the story. The style has a nice shojo soft touch when required for the more romantic scenes and has fun playing with the supernatural elements used in the story. The manga is endearing and is self-contained in one single volume. It comes to a satisfying ending that will eave readers smiling.
