Hazel and Gato’s path keep crossing with that of the Sanzo party during their journey westward. Hazel’s determination to wipe out all demons from the earth pits him directly against Kougaiji and his group. It’s Kougaiji’s group versus Gato and Hazel as the Sanzo party looks on concerned. Then when Lirin shows up and gets involved with Hazel, Sanzo and his gang will have their faith in each other tested as Sanzo’s beliefs and deeper feelings are put into question.

The Hazel story arc establishes the excitement and intrigue that make Saiyuki so enjoyable. This volume exposes why Hazel hates demons so much and reveals that he has more in common with Sanzo than anyone could have guessed. It sets him up as a more extreme reflection of Sanzo and raises some unsettling questions for our heroes. Just how does Sanzo feel about demons? Could he be swayed to making his search for the scripture into an aim to destroy the demons in order to protect humanity? Sanzo’s goal has been to get the sacred scripture to help end the evil influence that is causing demons to run amuck and thereby restore peace between the human and demon races. But considering all the hardships, tragedies and horrors they have witnessed at the hand of demons, could Sanzo change his mind? If he isn’t asking that himself, Sanzo’s friends are beginning to wonder just how he truly feels about them, since he is the only human in the group. The doubts Hazel successfully raises in Sanzo’s comrades will have repercussions that will be felt in the upcoming volumes.

The Hazel/Gato versus Kougaiji battle is an action sequence that spans two episodes. The damage Kougaikji, Yaone and Dokugaku suffer is extreme and reveals just how strong Hazel and Gato truly are. They are formidable enemies and from the fall out afterwards, the time when Sanzo Hakkai, Goku and Gokjyo will have to battle the necromancer and his servant may have to occur sooner rather than later.

EXTRAS:
Bonus features on this disc include textless ending version 2, original ending version 2, Geneon previews, and music clip “snow crystal” featuring Hakkai and sung by Masaki Nomiyama.

IN SUMMARY:
Saiyuki Reload Gunlock finds some exciting and intriguing new dimensions with the Hazel story arc, pitting the Sanzo party against each other as Sanzo abandons his friends and maybe his goal of restoring peace between the human and demons races.
