Barefoot Waltz is an anthology of romances at varying stages of denial, unrequited desires, and fulfilled wishes! It’s a potpourri of romance and seduction! First is the longest story in the manga about a reclusive writer getting an unexpected houseguest – the guy he had a short affair with years ago! Now the young man is not taking no for an answer and moves right in! And he doesn’t mind taking his share of the bed either!  This is a writer who won’t be lacking for any inspiration soon.  It’s comedic but also bittersweet. There’s hurt feelings there and the earnest young man trying to wake up the heart of the cowardly writer. When the ex of the boarder shows up, the writer gets his wake up call. He’s going to have to make a move and spill his heart or he’s going to lose the guy who holds it!

The other stories are shorter but still that interesting mix of bittersweet and sentimental. There are two friends who shared a moment three years ago and only act on it now. That’s a love that’s a slow burn for sure. Then there’s an ex-runner turned photo-journalist who has his eye on the high jumper who excels at being the object of his classmate’s hidden longing. Next is a pending break up that turns into a heartfelt make up. After, a Casanova falls for a love-phobic classmate. Then co-workers have to deal with hidden jealousies and secret desires. And lastly, there’s a bonus story about the writer and his lover.

It’s nice group of tender love stories. Some moments hurt the heart but overall the tales are all gentle love stories in the manga. The art is decent too and has varying explicitness depending on which story it is.  The manga is all about lonely hearts that find a way to bridge that space between them and the ones they love!

IN SUMMARY:
It’s a yaoi anthology filled with a whole lotta sweet, a little bit of bitter and everything in between!
