Two tales of might and bravery and Goku kicking butt! First in Tree of Might, set between DBZ eps 54 and 55, a fun trip out camping becomes a tale of terror for the woodland creatures and the Z Team! A strange meteor crash lands but that’s no rock! Instead it’s a seed and a huge alien tree is growing at an insane rate and sucking all the life out of the entire planet Earth! Goku and the Z Team have to find a way to chop down that tree. But this wasn’t all by accident. A Saiyan who looks a lot like Goku shows up and he has a group of baddies to stop the Z Team from saving the day. Everyone gets defeated except for Goku. But the cunning Turles has kidnapped Gohan and set the son against his dad. He’s actually trying to take down Goku! Little Gohan makes the perfect weapon because there’s no way dear daddy Goku will harm his son! It takes a cute baby dragon to help bring Gohan to his senses and then it’s up to Goku to save the day. It’s the mother of all spirit blasts in the final fight against Turles and the Tree of Might. Can Goku save the day? Like there’s any doubt! It’s another kick butt action loaded film. It also has what I call plenty of Bambi moments with the Z Team trying to save all the forest animals. And it has the baby dragon Icarus who proves unusually pivotal for a cute lizard sidekick in both of these films. Tree of Might runs an hour long and the second one is just over fifty minutes. In Lord Slug, set between eps 82 and 83, again Gohan proves to be a key to defeating the bad guy. This time Earth is threatened with a meteor (this time a real one) that will demolish the planet so it’s up to Goku and his pals to bust it up before it busts them and their home! No sooner do they save the day then Lord Slug lands on Earth with his armada. Lord Slug is a Namekian so evil that he was banished from his home world and now goes on a tour of destruction from system to system! He freezes the entire Earth and everyone on it in order to get the dragon balls and gain eternal youth. Now in full power, he takes on the Z Team and Goku. They take a huge beating and it will be little Gohan who helps his father to save the day and the planet yet again. In both movies I was surprised how beat up Goku got. But I forgot that this is early in the incredibly long series so he’s still not a full super Saiyan yet. And although I normally don’t go for the cutesy stuff, it had me howling watching little Gohan whistle and dance with the pudgy baby dragon. The show is peppy and fun. Sure it’s dated animation, but it’s bright and it is pure DBZ. It wouldn’t look right any other way! Like with all the DBZ FUNimation is gloriously throwing our way, the latest movies are given the same remastered treatment for superb visuals and clear sound. Plus you have a choice of original Japanese audio, English audio with US music, or the English audio with original Japanese music.
EXTRAS: Extra punches to this release include trailers of other FUNimation anime and a shiny and super slick tin case to hold the 2 discs in. It’s super slim too and has art on the inside of the cover.
IN SUMMARY: It’s two father and son action packed DBZ films! Earth is in twice the peril! It’s double the action coolness! |
