"I wanna solve this – whatever it takes!"

Light and his father have spent their fiftieth day in confinement at the pleasure of L, who is confused at Light's denial of being the murderer Kira.Misa wants to be set free, but L feels that Light is the first Kira and Misa is the second one based on the evidence available he has uncovered.

Pressure from the others at the NPA who know Soichiro, their chief of police is a good man, try to make L take a drastic step of releasing him to tale to him as Light's father, but when he meets the released Light and Misa, his father drives them both to what he terms as their execution. And as that was not considered enough of a tension build up, somewhere else in the city the Yotsuba Group are planning on who in their group of eight will be killed by the new Kira next.

Volume three kicks off with a brilliant storyline no one would have expected unless they had read the graphic novels. Execution is one of the strongest episodes in the entire series where L wants a confession out of Light and Misa Amane, but what happens is made more extreme with how it is filmed and animated. L thinks he is right about Light and Misa, but with them both having their memories of what they did wiped, L realises he must be wrong in the end even though he does not like to admit it.

The tension builds in the following episodes too as L wants Light to be bound with him by cuffs twenty-four hours a day much to Misa's chagrin. He has to agree with his order, and as L suspects Light as being Kira he organises for them to move to a new high rise building where they will conduct the investigation in private, showing them he is very serious about finding the murderers.

Although the story is serious in its nature, there is no shortage of humour. The main comic relief were L and Misa, Matsuda also has his part to play being a Misa Misa fan himself.
This is enjoyable and essential viewing, the story moves along at a good pace allowing the viewers to see what is happening.
