The final volume of Love Roma ends not with a bang, but with a warm swell of heartfelt emotions. This off-beat romance hits a few rough patches for Hoshino and Negishi as they deal with an awkward date after some unwanted time apart, a series of miscommunications, and the potential of separation after graduating high school.
This unique manga holds a rudimentary but distinct art style that seems to suit the directness of the story as it strives to portray the challenges and lives of two high school students falling in love. The struggles of Hoshino and Negishi to be understood and to understand each other, comes across in a touching manner. They deal with realistic obstacles in trying to be together, such as when to have sex and how to stay together when their paths after graduation may cause a great deal of physical distance between them. The story doesn’t try to answer the question of will they be together in the future, but rather focuses on their present and the realities of their yearnings and feelings for each other now.
Extras in this final manga volume include translation notes, afterword from the author, and a couple of short bonus stories. It also has one of the more heart warming send offs to fans that I’ve read in a manga.
IN SUMMARY:
Love Roma is a tender hearted romance that comes to a gentle close in this final volume. It has a unique story telling style and distinct art work that separates it from the usual romantic manga series out there. It strives to touch on the realities of the concerns and longings of high school students falling in love and succeeds with its own unique style.
