The play goes off but not without a hitch. A kiss is stolen and the triangle between Mariya, Mizuho and Takako heats up big time in the final volume of OtoBoku! More than the green eyed monster appears in the climactic last episodes of this side-splitting romantic dramedy! A dance party is coming up but Mariya is sick with a cold. The cold seems to have gotten to her along with that kiss she saw Mizuho give Takako because she’s freezing Mizuho out big time! Mizuho is a super sweet guy dressed as a girl but even in his most effeminate moments he’s not going to do nothing when his best gal pal keeps avoiding him. He confronts her (nicely) and Mariya’s solution is for them to go on a date! They do! Throw in some childhood moments, a heartfelt realization and a kidnapping and you’ve got more madcap gender-bending antics and romantic confusion to enjoy! After the kidnapping attempt, Takako knows Mizho’s secret. Is she going to spill the beans? The dance is coming up and it’s on Christmas Eve, the most romantic night in Japanese tradition when couples confess and all. Now it’s time for some confessions from Mizuho and he lays it on the line with Takako. It’s sugary romance at the dance party in the super sweet last episode of the TV show. But wait, it’s not the last episode of OtoBoku! The disc has a bonus episode that aired outside of the regular TV series. It’s a spoof of all the fairytales you can think of – Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Snow White, they even throw in a cameo by a little red riding hood! But it’s with all the cast of characters from OtoBoku as you’ve never seen them before! Its super fun and a great send off to the show that was so entertaining. Here I was all this time thinking it was Shion who’d win over Mizuho. I didn’t see that whole thing with Takako happening until it was well into it. The anime gets kind of dramatic in a soap opera way towards the end but it works really well with the storyline and makes the dance party that much more meaningful when the romance ignites.
EXTRAS: DVD extras include clean closing animation of the final episode, trailers, promotional music live action video of the song “Again” sung by and featuring Yui Sakakibara, and a feature “Live in Kawasaki” where the various female Japanese voice actors of OtoBoku perform character songs to a live audience!
IN SUMMARY: OtoBoku ends with a kiss, a secret coming out, and a dance! It’s zany gender-bending romantic sweetness through and through! |
