JAPANESE ANIME DVD SALES 2008 FIRST HALF REPORT, BLU-RAY RISING E-mail

Japan Video Software Association announced the state of anime according to DVD sales in the market from January - June 2008


According to the report, from January – June 2008 and by genre, Anime has a 27.4% sale ratio, and it is still number one in the Japanese DVD market followed by “Western TV Drama”, and “Asian Films” with 13.1%. However, the overall DVD market sale is down 6.6 percent from the preceding year, and anime has a 13.5% drop in sales and an 11.9% decrease in rental for the first half.

On the other hand, high-definition Blu-ray (including HD-DVD) overall sales occupied 1.6 percent of the total market with ¥2,266,000,000 in sales; an overall small percentage and amount, but with a growth increase of 95.9%. The report also states that Japanese animation on Blu-ray is already doing well in the second half of 2008, and the trend is expected to continue.

Also noted in the report, Japanese music is down 17.9 percent for the first half of 2008.
