Rona Fauna, a Third with strange powers and control of a weapon that can destroy the world, is confronted by Honoka. The girl with the third blue eye who belongs nowhere and everywhere may be the key to the planet’s very survival in the final mesmerizing installment of this superb science fiction series.

The conclusion to the anime will bring everything full circle. First though is the conclusion to the confrontation with Rona Fauna. In her attempt to rescue Joganki, Honoka comes to know a kindred spirit and in her compassion, tries to save a soul that seeks to destroy. This is one of the things that sets Honoka apart from her other anime “drifting lone wolf” contemporaries. Although she is forever an outsider who lives on the fringe, always venturing into the desolate wasteland, she does not push other people away. Instead she reaches out to help them. She is no reluctant hero, but an always astonishingly compassionate soul in a place where survival is harsh and many turn their hands against her. Her trying to save Joganki, a man who is of the Third, a race constantly at odds and subjugating humans, is proof of that. The end results of the rescue attempt and her meeting with Rona Fauna cement even more just how truly generous and selfless Honoka is.

Her confrontations with the Third though have not yet ended. No sooner does she return to the city when she finds out that her friend has been a victim of the Technos Taboo, a rule that has severe penalties for any human who dares try to create or attain forbidden technology. Thus do the Third control humanity. And finally Honoka has had enough. With Iks a curious member by her side, she moves forward to go to the most forbidden of the Technos places – the Steel Gorge. There she is met with the full armed forces of the Third headed by none other than Joganki, the man she just rescued! In a confrontation that will reveal much, The Third the anime comes to a provocative conclusion both mentally and emotionally.

There are many reveals in the last episode. Just what Iks purpose is, what is hidden in Steel Gorge, and a surprising confession to Honoka all exist here.  There is a wonderful action sequence between Honoka alone against an entire army that is visually stunning but over too quickly.  The anime doesn’t end with a large bang or guns going off. It keeps to the same reflective tone it has maintained throughout the series.  The sci-fi story relies on thoughtfulness with a surprisingly strong emotional undercurrent in the last moments of the tale.
