The murderous intrigue at the Yotsuba Group has all sides embroiled in treachery, deceit, and a web of death. Misa has been sent to infiltrate the group but at the cost of losing all her memories of the Death Note and Rem the shinigami, when the devious man behind Yotsuba claims her Death Note for himself. He has a wicked plan to make Misa his own, in every way…

Death Note is an astonishing feat of intricate writing and riveting story telling. A new Kira emerges and Misa is in grave danger. But little is what it seems on the surface alone. Plans within plans unfold, each proving more sinister than the last. Misa is being used by both L and Light each vying for their own agendas.  L is attempting to flush out the leader of the Yotsuba group as well as the third Kira. Meanwhile Light, without the Death Note, has no memories of his time with it. And yet there exists astonishing cold-blooded calculation in his every move. A feint, a car chase, and murder all follow suit. In the end of this volume, the entire surface of the deadly game L and Light are playing changes when the police get their hands on one of the Death Notes and discover at least one part of its ugly truth.

The story grows even more tense and suspenseful as it goes into its third and final act. The discovery by the Task Force could change everything. It also reveals how truly masterful and intelligent Light is with his forward thinking and intricate plotting to attempt to outwit L.  By the end of this volume, many secrets will be uncovered and someone will walk away with the shinigami eyes. Who will win in the end – L or Light? The stakes are rising, the clock is ticking and time for at least one of these players is running out.

In these episodes dealing with the Yotsuba Group, the anime plays on the age old theme that absolute power corrupts absolutely. And what could be more absolute than the power over death itself?  Humanity is shown in a tarnished light as Rem, a death spirit, is seen as compassionate and sympathetic while the humans lust and hunger to do away with each other for their own greed, vanity and desires. It would seem that in some cases, the real monsters aren’t the supernatural creatures, but the humans walking right beside us.
