Tetsunoke Ichimura a strong-willed kid along with his brother Tatsunosuke are the sons of a diplomat who wanted the people to live in peace during the early Meji Revolution, but when their parents are assassinated in front of them, Tetsu is eager to join the secret police, Shinsengumi, trying to find out who had murdered them. Though Tetsu's chance to become a Peacemaker is more testing than he first thought, as Tetsu's big mouth causes him to come up against criticism before he and his brother can be accepted into the Shinsengumi.

Okita, a sensual boy with feminine looks and huge eyes gives him a decent fight in the dojo and though they do take the boy in, the vice commander, Hijikata Toshizou makes it clear that he will not allow him to be taught the sword just to get his revenge on the death of his parents. Tetsus is asked if he can be unafraid of demons, but what will he do when he finds out the truth of who the Shinsengumi really are?

Nanae Chrono's art and skill with the written word show in this manga of courage, danger, hope and sorrow. Nanae teaches us all the power of compassion and love in the world of men, warriors who find their strength from the sword and might from a fearless heart. Tetsuo, a sprout of a kid is headstrong and at the same time something of a fool as he has no comprehension of what awaits him if the decides to be a true Shinsengumi.

The humour is fast, fun and the references to his cuteness are refreshing in such a generally violent manga as this one. Peacemaker will make an interesting, if different read for those into period action dramas.

IN SUMMARY:
A deep and action driven manga volume. Captures the era perfectly and pulls no punches with the style.
