A shy classmate, a girl with wings and a dire warning are only the beginning of the compelling mysteries in the latest volume of holic. Watanuki’s heart is in the right place but his kindness and compassion often put him in the path of malevolent and supernatural forces. Despite the dangers, he is compelled to help, partly due to his ability to see what others cannot and partly because he is simply that good and decent a person. This time around he learns that losing one’s self-restraint can come at a terrible cost. He also discovers the frightening power of words and the price of jealousy when he meets two very different twins. Alluring, occasionally disturbing, nothing is what it seems in holic, making it an addictive entity in anime. The show does find time for comedy. Yuko taking Watanuki with her on a shopping trip is full of fun. You just don’t picture the dimensional witch Yuko doing something as ordinary as shopping. But in everything she says and does, no matter how off-hand it may seem, there seems to be a hidden meaning to it all. She appears casual, but Yuko doesn’t appear to do anything without a reason. It was also surprising and funny to see Watanuki and Dameki go out on a double date with the twins in the two-part story. Again there is more going on than what meets the eye. As always, holic offers stories that are multi-faceted and thought provoking. The final episode in volume four was the real charmer for me. A mysterious gift by a well causes problems with the pipe fox attached to Watanuki. The mystery ushers Watanuki into a hidden, mystifying and dangerous world. The episode has a sweet, if a tad melancholy, nature. It had some endearing moments to be savored and enjoyed. A new ending theme is introduced this volume. “Kagerou” (Mayfly) performed by Buck-Tick is a quirky rock song well in tone with the off-kilter flavor of the series.
