Sakurashin is a strange town where demons live in a large number, the mayor is a young girl, and the city is protected by a group of super-powered girls and one ordinary guy.  At least Akina seemed ordinary until the truth comes out in the second volume of Yozakura Quartet.

A story with a lot of humor, a great deal of charm, and an abundant, dramatic mystery all converge for an enthralling manga series.  Each chapter almost works as a stand-alone slice of life in this unusual town.  At the same time, the chapters offer insight and clues to the building mystery and suspense.  First, Kyasuke and Akina get into a fight about kindly demon girl, Touka.  However, the Kepscke’s antagonism stems from a deeper source.  He knows who and what Akina truly is and he wants Akina to fulfill his obligation and become the “oyakuma”.  But Akina has his own path, one that is understandable but brings the unwanted attention of malevolent others.

Later we see a young demon named Rin join the town and that to witness the interesting welcome party it engenders.  Meanwhile, a late Spring party hosts all kinds of shenanigans and Hime must deal with living as mayor under her grandmother’s shadow.

Each tale has its quirky charm but they also introduce pieces of a puzzle that is becoming increasingly alarming.  The Seven Pillars and part of their purpose are revealed.  They have only a year before they “bloom”. But what will that mean for Akina and the denizens, both human and demon, of the town?  Akina plays a key role in all of this.  And both a precocious mayor along with an old man with a sinister aura give pause and a greater sense of apprehension in this unique adventure.

There’s also the interesting way the “day in the life” chapters showcase various town folk including some thrilling and largely amusing dynamics with the nuns and nurse of the town.

Manga extras include a bonus manga, short comic panels, translation notes, character sketches with bios, and a preview of the next volume in its original Japanese.

IN SUMMARY:
Akina’s secret identity is revealed and suspicious characters arrive on the scene in the latest volume.
