Chiaki has asked Nodame to play piano in his orchestra, the Roux-Marlet, for his first time conducting them.  There is a snag, however.  Rui decides to visit some of her old friends in the Roux-Marlet and meets Nodame on the way into the concert hall.  She is asked to play before Nodame can say anything.  Chiaki objects, but the concert master, Tomas Simon, overrules him.  The concert gets mixed reviews, but Chiaki doesn’t think it went well.  Nodame watches the concert from the audience, a little disappointed not to be playing with the orchestra.

After the concert, Rui wants to party, but Nodame wants to go home to practice for her exams and Chiaki wants to go home and sleep.  Rui tries to convince them to come, but her very angry mother comes into the picture.  Rui’s mother thinks all Rui wants to do is slack off, instead of performing and going to school.  They get into a fight and Rui’s mother insists that Rui go back to America with her.  Will Rui go back or not?

Chiaki finds out that one of his rivals (who happen to be a womanizer and pretty nasty) came to the concert, specifically to see him fail.  The rival, Yukihisa Matsuda, is jealous of all the success that Chiaki has had in the classical music industry for one so young.  The competition between those two heat up.

Nodame, meanwhile, practices for her trio performance and her exams.  Her trio performance goes well, even after a few bumps in the practices.  She did go a little overboard with her exams, and her professor has a few thoughts on that.  However, when she went to look at the exam marks, her professor took her aside to talk to her.  Will it be good or bad news?

Manga extras include translation notes, author biography and a preview of the next volume in the original Japanese.

IN SUMMARY:
The beat goes on, but are Nodame and Chiaki marching to the same drummer?
