An exiled princess, an isolated island, 12 people and a murder make for an enthralling mystery in the first novel of Nisioisin’s Zaregoto book series. The novel is a murder mystery that is an existential journey with a strong Nihilistic bent. Ii is a common fellow whose favorite phrase is “It’s all nonsense”. At nineteen he considers his existence meaningless and affects apathy with the aplomb of the truly reconciled. The one spot of meaning and worth in his life appears to be his feelings for Kunagisa Tomo, an eccentric computer genius. When she’s invited to the strange island where the eccentric and exiled Iria resides, she invites Li along for the ride. When they set foot there, they meet an assortment of bizarre young women – all of them geniuses. Be it a brilliant engineer or a blind painter, or an uncannily accurate fortuneteller, Ii will find himself surrounded by the strange, the beautiful and, soon, the terrifying. A gruesome murder changes a getaway into a deathtrap. Now Ii must uncover who the murderer is before the next genius is killed, lest it be his beloved Kunagisa. Rather than go the Film Noir route or present it as the thriller, the story evolves as a verbally challenging and introspective mystery. It looks at the nature of people, questions the meaning of existence, speculates on the definition of genius, and more. The story, through Ii’s investigation brings philosophy to the forefront along with number themes, Ocham’s Razor, and other perspectives, all to help solve a crime that grows increasingly complex with every turn of the page. Nisioisin’s novel is ever so lightly peppered with illustrations by Take. There are character images with the signing of each section of the book.
IN SUMMARY: The author of Death Note: Another Note and xxxholic: Anotherholic novels provides a complex and heavily introspective murder mystery in the Kubikiri Cycle, the first book in his Zaregoto series.
