SYNOPSIS: Insurrection will not be tolerated! To prove that point, the government has set a big, bad bomb to blast the planet Graceland right out of the sky. To make matters worse, the king is dead. However, before the Pirate King Bruce died, he hid billions in stolen loot on the doomed planet. Now, the galaxy’s most famous criminal – a mystery man known only as “Mister” – has busted out of the slammer to get his hands on the booty before it’s too late! Along with King Bruce’s daughter and his misfit band of “coyotes”, Mister sidesteps government goons, dodges a hotly investigator on his tail and fends off a dozen Gothic Lolita androids programmed to kill, kill, KILL! This thinpack box set contains the complete 12 episode series on 3 discs.
REVIEW: Coyote Ragtime is a fun heist series with lots of action, smooth jazz and great animation. Mister is the likeable tough guy with a bad streak plus a heart of gold. The anime begins with his prison break, his reunion with the daughter of King Bruce, Franca, and the search for a hidden treasure. While he gathers up the old gang of his fellow Coyotes, Mister stays one step ahead of some serious competition who wants him – dead or alive! Top that list with Angelica Burns who, with the help of her pretty protégée, is hot on the trail to collar Mister once and for all! For a heist anime, the show has a good pace and lots of action. Occasional flashbacks slow the energy down from time to time, but offer much appreciated insight into Mister, Angelica and Marciano. Not every agenda is as straight forward as it seems. Neither is the heist as easy as anyone hoped it would be. Soon it’s a race to the planet where the loot is hidden and the clock is literally ticking as the countdown to a bomb is on! The planet is scheduled for destruction. As if that wasn’t enough pressure, the syndicate (ie, Mafia) Guild is having a violent difference of opinion and the planet itself is having a civil war! So Mister and his troupe have to dodge bullets from every side, stop a bomb, get the treasure and escape the long arm of the law as well as that of the organized criminal guild, not to mention the dead Bruce’s crazy traps to get the treasure! It’s a lot of action, some great energy and a few surprises. For a sci-fi action series, the animation is great. It boasts fluid action sequences, sleek battle scenes and space ships, and interesting character designs. It succeeds in being showy and colorful without the CG being too heavy handed. The English voice cast also holds a bevy of well known voice talent thanks to the large number of female characters in the anime. Well known names and exceptional talent include Kira Vincent Davis as the psychotic Marciano, Christine Auten as the luscious and determined Angelica, Brittney Karbowskey as the innocent girl Franca, and Luci Christian and Jessica Boone add to the “12 Sisters”, the assassins that ardently serve Madame Maricano. The feel of the show, its off-center humor, anti-hero Mister, and overall energy will appeal to fans of Cowboy Bebop as well as Trigun. It’s a sci-fi heist story with a heart (think shades of Oceans 11) and promises a fun for viewers.
EXTRAS: Bonus features include clean opening and closing animation, ADV previews, production art gallery, and on air episode previews. The collection comes in a colorful thinpack featuring all the characters of the show.
IN SUMMARY: Coyote Ragtime is a high energy and smoothly executed sci-fi heist show. It’s an action anime that will appeal to fans of Cowboy Bebop and Trigun.
