What do Chihiro, a kind hearted guy with chronic bad luck, Tokino, his ever enthusiastic sweet friend, Renko, a mad scientist with her masochistic and Renko obsessed female robot Yamada, and Koyuki, a timid elementary school girl with scary powers, all have in common?  They’ve all won the lottery to become the next student council in the zany adventure-filled pages of Kujibiki Unbalance.

This manga series has one of the most unique and interesting origins in publishing.  It was a fictional manga within the popular manga series Genshiken.  Kujibiki Unbalance was later made into a hit anime series and the actual manga is derived from the anime.  The manga follows the anime closely with some variations and all new original stories.  Written by the creator of Genshiken, fans of that series can expect more off-the-wall humour, eccentric characters and all out fun in Kujibiki Unbalance.

Kujibiki itself is a type of lottery where kuji are drawn.  At the elite Rikkyoin High School everything, absolutely everything, is decided by Kujibiki  - in other words, by lottery!  Whether it’s admissions, exams or who is to sit on the student council, it’s all up to a person’s luck.  And the hero, Chihiro, a boy with terminally bad luck, is about to have it, and his survival skills, seriously put to the test when he wins admittance to the academy and then, by the lottery, is to become the next student council president!  This is no ordinary position.  At this unique school, where robots, bombs and magical powers are a daily occurrence, anything can happen and usually does.  For him and the three other students ‘lucky’ enough to be the candidates-in-training for the student council, it is going to be one amazing adventure!

Kujibiki Unbalance has its share of mystery.  There’s the current student council, made up of beautiful girls.  The president in particular, the composed Ritsuko, has a tie to both Chihiro and Tokino. The vice-president, Kasumi, always carries a sword.  In an original story exclusive to this manga, a thief, a possessed sword, and Kasumi all clash during a shine festival.  Out of Chihiro’s group, there’s the maniacal Renko, evil genius extraordinaire always with her besotted robot, Yamada, and there’s the extremely shy Koyuba who has incredible powers that put anyone near her at risk.

Chihiro and his group face perils untold but not without tons of comedy.  The quirky humour is a large attraction of the manga.  So too is the lush artwork and ample fan service.  There’s a little ‘yaoi’ nod which gives rise to swim suits and fan service when a few of the girls take trips to the beach and get stranded on an island.  The art is flat-out gorgeous with a rich glossy look as if the anime has been put to page.  This first volume also has a bonus Kujibiki Genshiken manga, revealing what the Genshiken gang think of the Kujibiki Unbalance series.  There are also translation notes, a preview of the next volume in the original Japanese, and character illustrations by Kengore Yakuma.

IN SUMMARY:
Kujibiki Unbalance  is a lush comedy manga series from the creator of Genshiken.  It’s quirky, creative and filled with gorgeous artwork.
