Feverish presents two engaging tales of romance and the triumph of love. It’s yaoi done with grace and charm. In the first story, Chihiro has longed for Kensei for four long years. The good looking host has no trouble attracting admirers of both genders, but he only has eyes for the closeted Kensei. Every morning he does a little B & E to his downstairs crush and gives him a very personalized wake up call. But four years of unreturned affection is wearing down the Lothario. Chihiro has a plan to give Kensei a shove off that fence he’s sitting on and it all starts with a pair of cuff links. The tale is fun and endearing. Kensei has to be one of the dearest men in yaoi. Luckily he has the crafty Chihiro to sweet-talk some sense into him. However, it’s the second tale about a model and a silversmith that completely won me over. In “Feather Hands”, Yoh, a model as arrogant as he is single-minded, sets his sights on some beautiful jewelry and he must have some for himself. But this jeweler is peculiarly particular about whom he’ll make his jewelry for, and Yoh doesn’t fit the bill. Rather than being incensed, Yoh’s interest is piqued and this attraction to the temperamental and eccentric Ari only grows with each rejection. Ari’s guard is up and a damaged past haunts him. Can Yoh’s direct and honest feelings get past those high walls? It’s a moving romance with great characters. “Feather Hands” has my vote for a sequel. In both stories, Takaaki Kusaka displays a graceful and beautiful art style that is enriching and beguiling. I would pick up any title by this mangaka in hopes of more endearing stories and enchanting illustrations. The end of the manga holds some humorous shorts and a story that ties together the characters of the two tales.
IN SUMMARY: Feverish is the perfect summer’s delight for yaoi fans. Its good humor, fine romance and gorgeous artwork make it a top pick.
