The series takes a divergent path as enemies close in on Saya and her family in the manga adaptation of the anime. Charles aka Carl continues his relentless attack on Saya. He wants payback bad, but he wants it with the ‘real’ Saya. The girl who thinks she’s human and doesn’t want to hurt anyone is not the creature he craves vengeance upon. It’s no fun getting revenge if the person doesn’t even remember why you hate them. And Charles is super strong. His powers even surpass Hagi’s. he might also be a Chevalier but what’s his beef with the girl with the power to slay the creatures of the night? For Charles it’s personal and he makes sure to make it that way for Saya when he kidnaps her younger brother, Riku. All they have as a clue to find Riku is a blue rose, leading them to Vietnam. It’s going to be a bloody trip down memory lane when Saya starts to remember a path that is decades old. It isn’t all bad, there’s also her dad reminiscing about how Saya first became part of his family. It makes her decide then and there that she’ll fight, she’ll fight to protect her family. But as she begins to recall her murderous past will her family stick by her when they learn who – and what – she really is? It’s a killer catch 22. She needs to remember to get stronger so she can protect her family. But as she and the family learn about her ‘true’ self it might tear her and family apart. Case in point: Charles has Riku. And it’s going all kinds of twisted when Charles takes an interest in Riku. It actually shows a bizarrely hum side to Charles’s nature. Meanwhile Riku and Kai are closer to the truth than they think. They come across a sickly girl named Mui and a special medicine, called D67. It has ties to Vietnam, the military, Saya, and her real enemy … her sister! Full of revelations, action and gore, the manga is faster paced and more action focused that the anime. The story is different too, like an alternate Blood+ universe. Here it’s Kai and Saya following the clues to Vietnam to rescue Riku while, in the anime, it’s the two brothers who chase after Saya. Plus Saya’s dad is still alive in the manga. At least so far. Also, there are 4 full color cover pages. There’s a cool splash page with Saya and Hagi. To my surprise, the manga also has some brief moments of comedy. There are wee moments of respite from the carnage. There are even comic panels too.
IN SUMMARY: Saya and her family head to Vietnam where her past and present clash in a pool of blood and mayhem!
