This ultra violent and incomplete OAV special is a sordid look at the historical point in Japan with a wicked evil Satanic cult trying to bring forth the devil’s spawn on Earth! Okay, so as a sequel to the fantastically violent Ninja Scroll movie, Ninja Resurrection the OAV doesn’t measure up. The animation isn’t as slick though still crazy violent and graphic. So first treat that NR like an alternate universe story of Yagyu Jubei, the deadly ninja with a haunted past. Also these episodes are narration heavy. The historical lessons are cool, but not exactly what a person looks for in a ninja action flick. First is that the show woefully does not end – yikes! It’s incomplete. But it does give a wicked evil story about a satanic cult, some serious zombie raising and a background story on Jubei. So what’s NR all about? Sure it gives a back story about to Jubei, sharing his intense traning, how he lost his left eye and a girl he was sweet on. But mostly the show is about the prophecy of the Second Coming. The chosen road could lead to salvation – or make Pagan Hell on Earth. It all depends on a flip of the coin, a persistent cult and Jubei wandering into the fray, sword drawn and blood spilling. The cult is seriously whacked! There’s some zombie lovin’ goin’ on (gross!) and the bad guys raising the most lethal swordmen from history to serve their cause. These undead samurai are all about the raping, pillaging and slaying. That’s where the heavy splatter content and “mature subject matter” hangs out. So if you can watch a show for its excesses and violence and not care too much about the incomplete story then take the anime for the thrill ride and gorefest it is and enjoy!
