If you haven’t read the last volume, then stop now, as this review will contain major spoilers of what happened last time.  The latest volume of Kurohime sees her embark on an exciting new quest.  But it comes at a hefty price for the witch-gunslinger!

The last volume ended not only the last story arc but also Zero’s life!  Kurohime regained her body and her powers as well as her heart.  But it came at the terrible cost of Zero’s life.  Now Kurohime has a new quest to resurrect the love of her life, and no gods or devils had best get in her way!

There’s a hiccup right away to her plan, though.  Severely damaged from her battle, her powers were used up to heal herself and she now finds herself trapped in a younger form.  This time she’s not reduced to a child, but the form of a young teen --- with reduced powers.  It’s in this form that she must go forth and discover the key to resurrecting Zero, with the devil Asura and Onimaru along for the ride.

She’s very different from the former Kurohime.  With her heart restored her compassion flows freely, as does her determination to do right --- just what her beloved Zero would do.  Saving baby turtles gives her an amazing way to travel through the sea to get to the Island of the Rising Sun --- Yamato.  During the sea voyage, she is shown an amazing place filled with mythical creatures.  And just shy of Yamato’s shores, Kurohime dives into the middle of a war between humans and merfolk.

When she and her companions reach Yamato, she finds herself lost in a forest where no one is said to leave alive.  Between angry mermen and hungry ghost, the legendary witch-gunslinger has her hands full.  Upon finally reaching the base of Yamato’s great mountain, she must descend into the Land of Devils in order to find her sweet Zero.  She risks being transformed into a demon going insane and more by the time she comes face to face with Asura’s master.  There, she is told the gods true goal.  In order to stop them and gain the power to restore her beloved, Kurohime learns the most shocking revelation yet.  Every time she gains back her power, she loses more of her memories of Zero!  In other words, to bring him back to life, she’ll have to sacrifice the very love in her heart that drives her!

The manga also has fun integrating some of Japan’s more ancient myths into the world and challenges of Kurohime.  The belief that a mermaid’s flesh can bring immortality, the beliefs around the gods and spirits such as Suraku, and a creative concept of ogres are well woven into the new story arc.  The riveting action and creative fantasy in Kurohime are superb.
