Junior high student Tsuna is a failure at school, sports, and social life. He doesn’t have too many friends, nor is he popular – really his life is going no where. But when toddler assassin Reborn arrives to groom Tsuna for his future as a Mafia boss, Tsuna may have found the “magic bullet” he needs to turn his life around. Then again, really he needs a Mafia hit man tutor like he needs a hole in the head... and he's about to get both! In volume eight of the series, students at Tsuna's school are being attacked, and it's up to Tsuna and Reborn - on orders from the ninth generation boss of the Vongola Family - to figure out why and take the culprit down. Then it's time for a lunch break, featuring the ever-deadly cuisine of Bianchi, who has a lesson in love to teach. But the big surprise is Tsuna's discovery that a member of his "family" has become a turncoat! Reborn is still going strong and gaining popularity as it delves deeper into the ever-expanding plot made possible by the crazy mind of Akira Amano. Reborn is very Shonen Jump – it’s weird and wacky and often downright funny. It’s well balanced in its humour and action, never getting too serious, but never losing its stride either. The art continues to be very detailed, but always remembers to get weird and super deformed when such a style will work towards bringing up some laughs. There’s certainly a lot going on with each turn of the page – you’ll want to scan back after reading each page just to catch all the little details you may have missed the first time through because of how much is poured into each frame. It’s always been a pretty wacky series both visually and story wise, and it doesn’t seem like it’s thinking about letting up in that relation! Whenever we can learn a bit about the artist/author of a book series, we learn more about the series itself. Akira Amano was born in Aichi Prefecture, located in central Japan. After early versions of the series were published in Seinen (young men's) manga magazines, Reborn! first appeared in Weekly Shonen Jump as a stand-alone short story in late 2003. The massive success of this one-shot story led Weekly Shonen Jump to begin serializing Reborn! in mid-2004. Amano's work, with its entertaining mix of action, comedy and drama, remains extremely popular with readers.
IN SUMMARY: Reborn is a perfect example of great Shonen Jump manga – a series that will appeal to a wide audience and entertain all who read it. It’s funny, well put together, and features an art style all its own.
