In the few years that have passed since the last volume, big changes are in store for Eden as it embarks on a whole new arc.

Time has passed and the face of the world is changing but not its continual bleakness of being.  Kenji tries to save the woman, Marihan, in attempting to stop a terrorist attack.  Violence and tragedy soon follow and in the aftermath of a death both tragic and senseless, Kenji’s heart is awakened.  But what good is a heart to a killer^

Although it is now 2112, the threat of the Closure Virus has only grown stronger over the years, now overtaking entire cities and transforming them.  However, a research facility is about to discover a shocking truth about the virus and the possible fate of humankind.  The threat of the virus is more than a global pandemic, is it devastation for the entire planet as we know it … or the next inevitable step in evolution.  That this calamity of nature may be an unstoppable force brought about by existence merely reflects the grim inescapable tragedy that life itself brings.  There is no beginning without an end, no start without a finish, no life without death.

For Elijah it is the death of a dear friend that brings him to Peru and to cross paths with the brash police officer, Miriam Arona.  People close to both of them were murdered and they are after the same killer.  The time that has passed shows a very different Elijah than the struggling innocent boy who first fell in with Nomad.  He is calm, deliberate and strategic in all he does.  By contrast, Miriam fights against the stream of Propater politics and corruption.  In some ways she is much like the boy Elijah used to be.  But what fragile innocence she still has will be put to the test as their search for those responsible for the murders has her being forced to work with the enemy, a Propater agent named Wendy McCall.   This turn of events will open Miriam’s eyes to the sleazy nature of what and who she held close to her heart.

The fate of people in this series is often dismal.  There is a piercing futility to their struggle.  The bleakness of survival that Hiroki Endo paints seems to be a nihilistic trademark to his writing.  In addition, the author seems inclined to spare no one.  In this volume we see a longtime character of the manga meet a violent end after having survived several grim trials.  Is such tragedy and brutality inevitable?  Is the struggle to rise above such suffering futile?  These are some of the questions posed by this riveting story.

Manga extras include a glossary, Eden time-line and translation notes.

IN SUMMARY:
Death gives birth to a new gripping chapter of the Eden saga.  It’s old and new foes coming together for a riveting and ruthless new story arc.  The world of Eden is simultaneously bleak and enthralling.
