The People’s Army is growing once again and the Imperial forces speed to crush them. And they are not the only ones hurtling towards an inevitable confrontation. A prophecy is about to come to life. One involving Cleo and Vetti who meet for one last time over bared blades as all truths are at last revealed and the fate of the universe lies in the outcome.

The final volume of Glass Fleet pulls few punches and provides a surprising ending. There is a tremendous battle between the two fleets. A big shake up occurs within the pope’s office and a zealot usurps his place pitting Vetti against his foes from a surprising angle, and at a harsh cost.  Some will lose their sanity, some will gain love, and others will lose their lives before the series is done. But at the heart of the anime is the story about Cleo, Vetti and Michel. Cleo fights for freedom. Oddly enough, Vetti does too in his own way, but one that has become twisted over the years of abuse he has suffered and has given. And then there’s Michel who holds onto her pride and noble spirit to keep the needs of the people first. But her heart as a woman suffers and she at last succumbs to Cleo’s embrace to find healing within his arms.  In the end, the answers surrounding these three will be answered. However I felt that a confrontation between Vetti and Michel was missing. After the events between them when he had drugged her, we still are not told adamantly what occurred that night. It makes the end that much more surprising as it unfolds.

The anime has maintained a period piece epic feel throughout and that is particularly true for the finale which is full of pomp and circumstance and scenes of the nobility of spirit in many of the characters viewers have come to know are witnessed. Replete with action, armies battling, swordplay and a shocking sacrifice highlight this exemplary series.
