FUNimation Entertainment hits Blu-ray once again with Dragon Ball Z’s Dead Zone the Movie and World Strongest double feature.
So what do we have here. Well, in the first story, Dead Zone, Garlic Jr. is after the Dragon Balls to summon the dragon Shenron and ask for immortality, and Goku becomes involved when Garlic’s minion kidnaps Gohan who has possession of one of the mystical ball. Now immortal, Garlic Jr. still cannot attain victory with his battle against Goku, and rather than living in humility for the all eternity, he unleashes his ultimate weapon, the Dead Zone, as a last ditch effort to get rid of Goku and company.
In the second story, the dragon Shenron makes another appearance, and grants another wish to a villain to revive his mentor, Dr. Wheelo from his icy grave. However, Dr. Wheelo, whose brain lacks the physical body, is in search for the strongest fighter he can inhabit, thus with his genius and power body, he can rule the world. As Goku stands in his way for world dominance, Goku himself has become the target of the evil Dr. Wheelo to achieve his demented ambition.
Of course, both stories come with tons of humor and action that Dragon Ball Z fans have known and loved, and having these movies in high-definition surely puts these two movies up a notch or two considering they originally came out decades ago; Dead Zone in 1989 and World’s Strongest in 1990.
BLU-RAY FORMAT: Having that said, FUNimation Entertainment has remastered and digitally restored the movies to their glory with vibrant and vivid colors for their high-definition treatment, and overall picture quality is very pleasing. In addition, having seen this with a 120Hz refresh rate gives the animation clarity and depth perception between the foreground and background images. The audio courtesy of Dolby True HD 5.1, gives the scenes dramatic sound with overall excellent sound placement. Also, the menu system used in this disc is very clear and well placed. Access to features and setup is very intuitive.
EXTRAS: Although no extras are mentioned or shown on the main menu, an audio commentary is available for the Dead Zone courtesy of Chuck Hube (Garlic Jr.) and ADR Director, Chris Cason. Do watch and listen, as their commentary is very entertaining.
IN SUMMARY: Truly a masterful way to bring excitement to an old anime favorite by mixing new technology with an action classic. It is Dragon Ball Z like you’ve never seen before. |
